The Challenge: When a Custom Build Starts Consuming the Business
LNDA's WooCommerce store had earned its complexity honestly. The makeup palette builder — which let customers assemble personalised, reusable palettes from individual eyeshadows, blushes, lipsticks, and highlighters — was not something you could configure with an off-the-shelf plugin. It was purpose-built, deeply integrated into the product catalogue, and central to the brand's identity. The same was true of the subscription system, which rewarded higher-frequency orders with progressively greater discounts and allowed customers to adjust the contents and delivery intervals of their packages from their own account page.
The problem ran deeper than a single complicated feature. LNDA had been operating across three separate site solutions — each requiring its own maintenance cycle, its own agency touchpoints, and its own set of manual update processes. Any change that touched more than one system meant coordinating across platforms, reconciling data, and absorbing the overhead of three distinct tech stacks.
Custom builds of this depth require a developer's involvement for every platform update, every compatibility issue, and every new feature request. For a brand with LNDA's commercial ambitions, that created a fundamental imbalance: engineering time was being spent on maintenance rather than momentum. The team's attention — which should have been directed toward campaigns, customer acquisition, and entering new markets — was being pulled instead toward support queues and technical debt.
Moving a WooCommerce store with custom subscription logic, a skincare quiz, and a bespoke palette builder requires a partner with both technical depth and sound judgment — knowing what Shopify's native architecture can handle, what Shopify Functions can extend, and where genuine custom development is actually necessary. Shopify Plus offered the path forward. Finding the right team to execute it was the critical variable.
The Solution: Complex by Design, Clean by Execution
Scandicommerce's approach to the LNDA migration was grounded in a single operating principle: replicate everything that made the brand's store distinctive, but build it the way Shopify was designed to work. That meant a thorough audit of the existing feature set before a single line of code was written — identifying what could be handled natively, what required Shopify Functions, and where genuine custom development was actually necessary.
The centrepiece of the build was the makeup palette builder. On WooCommerce, this had required substantial bespoke development to function. Scandicommerce rebuilt it directly within Shopify using Shopify Functions — delivering the same customer-facing experience at a fraction of the original cost. Shoppers can still browse individual products, assemble their own reusable palettes, and swap colours freely. The experience is unchanged. What changed is that it no longer requires a developer to keep it running.
The Solution Part 2 (Subscriptions, Migration, International)
The subscription system was moved with the same attention to fidelity. LNDA's tiered discount structure — where customers who order more frequently receive progressively greater savings, and can customise the contents and cadence of their subscriptions from their own account page,
International expansion now underway, the Shopify Plus architecture provides the multi-currency and multi-market infrastructure to support growth beyond Norway without requiring another platform rebuild.
Linda Johansen launched her eponymous skincare and beauty brand with a clear proposition: premium, self-formulated products and a shopping experience built deliberately around the customer. The brand grew quickly, earning Norway's Netthandelspris two consecutive years — 2019 and 2020 — with the independent jury praising its purchasing experience, process control, and its ability to turn customers into devoted fans. Backed by that reputation, LNDA set its sights beyond Norway and into international markets.
But that growth was being held back by the platform underneath it. LNDA's WooCommerce store had been built up over years with a high degree of custom development — including a signature makeup palette builder, subscription packages with tiered discount structures, and a personalised skincare quiz. Maintaining that stack demanded constant developer attention and pulled the team away from commercial work.
LNDA chose Scandicommerce for their track record with technically demanding Shopify builds and for a team willing to invest the creative problem-solving that a brand of this complexity required.
